About this calculator

This calculator estimates the fuel cost of running a petrol or diesel generator during load-shedding or as a backup power source. Enter the fuel consumption in litres per hour (from the manufacturer spec sheet), the number of hours you run it, and the fuel price per litre.

The formula is simply Litres per hour × Hours × Rand per litre. A small 3 kVA petrol generator using 1 L/hr for 4 hours a day at R23/L costs R92/day, which adds up to about R2,760 per month — significantly more than the equivalent electricity from Eskom.

That's why generators are cost-effective for occasional use but expensive as a primary power source. For frequent, long-duration load-shedding, an inverter-and-battery UPS or a solar-and-battery system typically pays back within a few years compared with generator fuel costs. Don't forget to add oil and periodic servicing (roughly R0.50–R1.00 per operating hour) on top of the pure fuel cost, and factor in the cost of safe fuel storage.

How it works

The calculator multiplies fuel consumption (in litres per hour, from the manufacturer spec) by the hours you'll run the generator and by the current fuel price per litre to give a total fuel cost.

Generator fuel costs per kWh generated are typically 4–8× the cost of Eskom electricity, which is why generators only make sense as a backup during load-shedding rather than as a primary power source. For anything more than occasional use, a solar-and-battery or inverter-and-battery system usually pays back within a few years compared with ongoing generator fuel.

Fuel cost = Litres/hour × Hours × Rand/litre

Litres per hour = manufacturer spec; Hours = total running time in the period; Rand per litre = current fuel price.

1 L/hr petrol, 4 hrs/day for 30 days at R23/L

Frequently asked questions

What fuel consumption should I use?

Small (2–3 kVA) petrol generators use around 1 L/hr at half load; larger diesel gensets use 3–6 L/hr. Check the manufacturer spec.

Does this include oil and servicing?

No — add roughly R0.50–R1.00/hr for consumables and periodic services on top of the fuel figure.

Petrol vs diesel — which is cheaper?
